Digital Integration of Microbiological Research

Author: Paul F. Uhlir
Abstract:

Microbiological research is rapidly moving from a "small science" to a "big science" paradigm, and from an in vitro to in silico approach. In order for this transition to be made fully and successfully, many "soft" infrastructure components--the organizational, economic, legal, and sociocultural aspects--need to be considered and implemented.

This presentation will provide an overview of the underlying principles and conditions that the microbial research community might want to consider in making this transition.

The presentation is based on a book that the presenter is coauthoring with Jerome H. Reichman and Tom Dedeurwaerdere, "Global Intellectual Property Strategies for the Microbial Research Commons--Governing Digitally Integrated Genetic Resources, Data and Literature" (forthcoming) Cambridge University Press.
