e-Science in South Africa: research to design a roadmap

Author: Paul Laughton

The South African Department of Science and Technology (DST) is making a significant investment in e-infrastructure to position South Africa as a viable contributor to the world of e-science.

The DST along with the council for industrial and Scientific Research’s (CSIR) Meraka Institute have created and funded a number of infrastructure initiatives namely: the South African Research Network (SAReN), the South African Grid (SAGrid), the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) and the South African Very Large Database (VLDB).

These all form part of the South African e-infrastructure. With all this e-infrastructure development it may seem that South Africa may have the necessary tools to compete in the world of e-science, however e-infrastructure alone cannot ensure this. This presentation shares the proposed research design in an attempt to develop a roadmap for South Africa to harness the full potential of e-science.

This roadmap could be a very useful tool for South African policy makers in an effort to get the most out of their investment in e-infrastructure.
