The Practice and Future Development of the Survey Research Data Archive in Taiwan

Author: Ruoh-rong Yu
Abstract:

The Survey Research Data Archive (SRDA), founded in 1994 by the Center for Survey Research (CSR), curates the largest collection of digital survey data on social sciences and public health in Taiwan. It engages in the acquisition, preservation, and dissemination of high quality survey data collected from academic and governmental agencies. The archive constitutes a valuable resource for researchers and policymakers within and outside Taiwan. The CSR has strived to facilitate the usage of data by providing more friendly on-line services, enhancing the value of existing data, holding workshops to propagate data, and publishing periodicals on newly-released datasets.

On the other hand, the CSR has been devoted to strengthening the protection for confidential data. SRDA’s network system, computer lab and secure data room have been confirmed to meet the requirements of ISO27001:2005 International Standard for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) by the British Standards Institution (BSI) in 2010. For some confidential survey data, the SRDA offers restricted access via on-site and remote facilities. In addition to the current development, the future prospects and challenges of SRDA shall be discussed.
